A ride together in bicycles is a break from the mundane, an energy booster and, beyond all, a joy of being in a group for the techies in Trivandrum Bikers Club.
In four months, they have made short and long trips together covering the length and breadth of the city on weekends. Says Anoop Ashok, lead - corporate marketing of SunTec Business Solutions here, who started the group, “I was part of a biking club while working in Bangalore for nine years. On coming here, I found a similar cycling culture, having people with an urge to ride. To bring about a community of theirs was the next thing to be considered, and I made one such inside the company I was working with initially.”
In the first trip itself, they rode 60 kilometres and the longest ride in the history of the club was from Thiruvananthapuram to Kollam. Their choice is a hybrid bike for city trips and road bikes for long rides. “Before going on long trips, we ensure that the participants are well prepared for it. The tedious and laborious workouts at health gyms to shed those extra kilos can be best avoided through cycling, an effortless and enjoyable exercise,” explains Anoop.
Yet, he admits that cycling is not that simple, “it is an art, of course,” he adds.
The group, which began with a few members of SunTec group, got expanded with the addition of some more members from other IT firms and has a fair membership of 30 now. Other than weekends, the team also takes short rides on weekdays beginning from 7 am and winds up before the commencement of office hours. Finding inspiration from the club, three members have opted for the cycle ride to travel from their home to office.
After a few rides, they went online by starting a Facebook page and a group titled Trivandrum Bikers Club and Cycling Kerala respectively. “We are trying to promote our initiative for a cause. And to expand the group with more members like the Kochi Bikers Club and Chennai Cycling Club; conducting events and organising programmes,” says Praveen R, another member of the group that created the Facebook page.
The team is aiming to make it big with a huge outreach in Kerala. The Club is inviting like-minded people to join in. Interested persons may contact Anoop at 8086006877.
